Culture may be defined as a ‘social heredity’ transmitted from one generation to another generation with the accumulation of individual experiences, or a mode of activities differentiating people of one society from another society. Culture cannot be a biological phenomenon but a learned pattern of social behaviour to be followed. It is a wonderful and unique phenomenon of human society with colourful diversity always changing its patterns which is the greatest beauty of human society. Culture forms beliefs, conveys ideas, and shares knowledge on customs and values. All of these characteristics are communicated through language which is an integral part of culture (Taga, 1999).

I've been asking people here (we have an intercultural affairs office) what is the difference in multicultural and intercultural?   That office just changed its name from multi- to inter-.  The college encourages people to study "abroad" for a semester.  Not all take advantage of this opportunity.  I find that often the returning students suffer withdrawal symptoms missing the place they visited and got to know quite a lot about.  The students who haven't had the experience sometimes don't seem very much interested in the experience the returning students have had.  So they don't have many people they can share with.  I've lived and worked in various other countries and so I now have several places to miss.  But it means I feel at home in those places and now have multicultural and intercultural connections.  So what is the difference between the two?

I think multiculturalism refers to races from different cultures living in the same place, but they do not have interaction with each other, e.g., there is a city with different races: Chinese, Indians, Italians, etc. Each race has its own cultural aspects, traditions, customs, etc. If there is an Indian festival, for instance, all the people who help in organising the event, are Indians. Now, imagine an Italian who is a volunteer to help and contribute to an Indian event. When this happens, it is interculturalism because this Italian person,e.g., has  interaction and dialogue  with the Indians.In other words, in interculturalism, people from different cultures have critical dialogue and interaction with each other.

You're right, I enjoyed the article though it was not an easy read.  Your answer before sounds essentially like what interculturalism should be.  Albion College in Michigan, USA, is a small liberal arts college.  When I first joined the faculty, I had just come back from living for two years in China.  The dearth of international students was a shock to me.  In China, I was included in the life of several friends - we cooked together sometimes, talked and laughed.  I really missed that life.  I became advisor to the Jewish students and later, when the Asian students started their group, I was their advisor until the fellow who would have been their advisor was on sabbatical came back.  One Chinese-American student joined the Jewish student group.  I was very pleased about this but there was still far too little happening of that sort.  Things got chummier as time went on.  I''ve now been retired for almost 12 years, but I always join all the student groups who have food-related events.  :-)  Now more and more, the students join each others' clubs.  Lots of the Black Student Alliance members are white, Asian, etc.  This weekend the Muslim Student Alliance and the Jewish students are going on a field trip together to visit a synagogue and a mosque.  It is very exciting and I feel as if these students can teach the rest of the college a great deal about interculturalism.

Based on your interaction and participation in  different activities and gatherings of people from other cultures, you have been involved in interculturalism.

I almost have the same experience in Kuala Lumpur. I have been teaching English To Japanese people living here since 5 years ago. Before that, I did not know a word in Japanese and I knew little about Japanese culture, food, customs, holidays, singers, music, beliefs, etc. However, I started learning many things including Japanese language. Now I am a fan of Japanese snacks as well :).  I have many Japanese friends now and I almost never miss Japanese events being held in Kuala Lumpur.

My Japanese friends have the same experience. Since they have known me, they have also learnt a lot  from me about my country Iran and they all want to visit Iran one day.

Yes!  It is wonderful when it happens.  I have the feeling that if our leaders could have had that kind of experience they would not be so quick to hate or fear others.

Hi Sheeraz, it is always wonderful to talk with you.  I think RG is a perfect place to practise interculturalism.  I feel as if I have friends from many countries here.  People ask questions and answer them knowing who the others are and probably able to guess at their culture -  and almost everyone is warm and friendly to the others.  It isn't the same as being there and enjoying the different holidays and customs of the others, but at least you can visualize yourself being there and enjoying the visit!  You can but hope!

Sheeraz - You're so kind.  I'm so glad Masoumeh started the question.  It gives people a chance to really think what interculturalism means to THEM, and to respond in a way they probably wouldn't to a more technical question.  :-)

Intercultural ism  remains the pathway for unifying social fabrics of various regions & places as due to the scientific & technological development the world has become smaller place for our mobility.

Cultural environment is the basic need of our time .We all are aware that with our birth ,our identity is known thou our parents with their inheritance of CASTE,CREED,& RELIGION .

In the present time we cannot  both the  place our religion only at a one line of group our social relation with our involvement with different types of places & religion may help us to know the cultural of each other both within the mind & heart due to the our proximity ,& in the line with our social relation matrimonial & other cultural line co-relate which remain a joining bond for Intercultural ism .

This is my personal opinion
