A definitive definition of "hostile abdomen" probably doesn't exist. Nevertheless operations and mainly re-operations in visceral surgery quite often present technical difficulties which are tricky to face even for a skilled and expert surgeon (multiple tenacious adhesions, etc. multiple entero-atmospheric fistulas, etc.). Which are your criteria to foresee a "hostile abdomen" in elective surgery? Which precautions should be taken during surgery and in the post-operative period? What about the "open abdomen procedure?
