I am working with B6 strain of mice and need to study the markers for bone formation in the serum. But before doing that I would like to find out the quality of the serum, is there some standard that I could compare it with or some assay or a marker I could test for.
You can go serial dilution of the serum and do ELISA with positive antigen. More the dilution giving positive result, it is a serum with high titre. You can resort to western blot and see the positive results. For removing impurities like lipids, if any, purification by HPLC can be resorted to.

There should not be a problem in the quality of your serum samples from blood drawn and stored properly immediately after withdrawal because temperature may affect some of the serum parameters you are measuring. Obviously the serum samples should be very clear and not cloudy. As for other aspects of your serum quality such as the consistency in the level of your measured parameters, you may want to use available commercial kits with standarized solutions.
