Bridging the gap between education- industry in nursing practice has been discussed for many years, in fact Benners` has highlighted in the issue of helping role and mentoring system..the problem arise when the education and industry are not talking the same language..the education always feel that the industry should portray good role model to guide the newly graduate nurses and the industry expected education should produce qualified nurses who are safe and competent. the internship program should consists of both areas to work together (clinical will contribute with the current practice) and education will give the best approach in teaching ie simulation learning etc) it will be very good for internship program and also to reflect on the nursing curriculum. always remember to invite the clinician as part of curriculum development committee members.

Internships are a solution to the problem - however, in some countries and with the increased number of nurses graduating this has also become a problem, as there is no place to accommodate the newly graduates to complete their internships.

I think it depends on a number of factors - for instance where the education is situated (is this in the formal educational sector or part of an industry generated continuing education program?). There seems little doubt that there are students graduating as RNs with relatively little clinical experience, despite the best efforts of education providers - the issue then becomes managing the transition to clinical reality and providing sufficient education and resources to enable new graduates to continuing learning and consolidating there knowledge. This may be achieved in a number of ways - through supported orientation programs linked to graduate and post graduate education opportunities, such at the Nurse Entry to Practice program (NetP) that are offerred in NZ. These involve a more closely supported forst year of practice, and are linked with the opportunity to enrol in a graduate or postgraduate paper, relevant to their area of practice. In this was the clinical needs of the nurse are linked to the academic aspects of their continuing education. There are many other models, but I would see collaboration and interaction between agencies providing education and those who are employing the nurses as essential to maintaining a responsive and relevant education program - keeping aware of the needs of all involved (including the recipients of care) and engaging with a reflexive model.
I fully agree with you Raijah Rahim and Theodora Issa. Graduate practicum or internship is needed to expand and extend nursing functions that will link education and labor industry. I also agree with Sandra Richardson that collaborative practice is another link between education and labor industry. In addition, advanced knowledge and skills through graduate education and practicum are needed to collaborate. Autonomy and skills in decision making, communication, and leadership are required in collaborative practice.
Grants, scholarships, tuition vouchers, and loan reimbursements, designed to lower the cost of a nursing education, have also tended to depress starting wages. This is because nursing graduates who receive subsidized education through these programs are willing to, or in some cases are required to, work for lower starting wages than they would without the subsidies.As a result all nursing graduates are lower, including for those who did not receive a subsidy for their education through the government programs.

Very true. Sometimes the regulatory body does not update the syllabus though there is no restriction for the educational institutions to add new knowledge. But the problem is you keep adding new (updated) content without deleting the irrelevant subjects matters and this results in 'content elephantiasis'. Both teachers and students have limited time to focus on education and results in superficial learning. Hoping to experience the better future for nurses and nursing.
