I have observed diffuse streaks in the electron diffraction of 2D crystalline material. I am not quite sure how I should interpret these streaks. I was wondering what the physical meaning of these features appeared in the electron diffraction is? How do we figure out the orientation (Zone axis) of the crystal when the exact locations of ED spots are not really obvious. Enclosed you can see the ED that I was referring to. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for the clear explanation. This phenomenon makes a lot of sense now. I just have one more question. What is the reason for having extra spots on ED representing planes with d-spacing values that cannot be seen in XRD. Is that because of double diffraction due to the small wavelength of the electron beam? or this effect might have something to do with the nature of the 2D materials? I would really appreciate it if you can help me with that, too.
