Leadership is based on the relationship between the leader and the follower. Depending on the leadership style, the direction of this relationship is determined. In autocratic leadership, the relationship is top-down, where the follower has no choice but to comply with the leader’s orders. In servant leadership, meeting the follower’s needs is the top priority. Between these two contrasting styles, there are various other styles. From the follower’s perspective, how can we explain compliance with the leader’s orders in the following situations:
In the case of unethical orders: How does the follower respond to orders of violence or torture despite their conflict with human principles?
In the case of lack of understanding: How does the follower obey the leader in the case of orders whose purpose is unknown, or orders that do not clearly serve the organization’s vision?
In the case of destructive orders: How does the follower respond to the leader’s orders that entail harm to the follower’s own life, such as self-sacrifice and suicide missions?
