Given the many cases of papers being retracted because of plagiarism and data falsification, we should think of strategies to prevent such unethical conduct before the whole basis of scientific progress which is based on trust collapses. i posed this question in the scientific communication tag but there was no response from anyone.
Good question. I have been thinking about this matter. I used to think that research can be carried out (duplicated) by another person to verify if data obtained by one scientist or researcher is accurate.
However, recently (last week) I attended a talk. The invited motivation speaker was Md. D... of IAB. I was quite shocked when he said that 95% of speech (words) cannot be trusted to be true. As bad as that; it's very sad. But I started to question whether the things reported in research paper are 100% accurate.
I agree with Devang that each researcher should be ethical. We research to know the truth; how can we not VALUE truth?
Unfortunately, the publish or perish culture that once was confined to US academia has now spread throughout the world and KPIs based in impact factors and the reward system have encouraged unethical behavior. If left unchecked then the whole research culture is in danger of collapse.
