In the field of biosciences we often get in contact with the questions: Are viruses alive, a form of life? Is fire a form of life? Stars also burn fuel and stay stable until their fuel is burned entirely, explode in a supernova, and probably a new star is formed from this supernova. So are stars alive?

Although astronomers use the terms alive and dead to refer to stars that are still fusing atoms in their cores or not, in any other sense of the words "alive" or "dead" they are no more alive or dead than a steel ingot, or a gold bar. They exist, but they have none of the properties of living organisms.
