There are about 25 counties in 10 districts rearing yaks in Bhutan, and fortunately I have census for the yak population in counties-wise (herd characteristics). The problem is that I do not how to select the study sites (counties/villages) for data collection. I was wondering if I can use 50/50 thumb rule firstly to screen??? Your comments and suggestions will be invaluable to me.
Stratified random sampling would be best suited for your study. because, you will not miss any geographical area or characteristic Yak population. I hope you can understand Stratified random sampling. You have to pick samples randomly from all different strata. The strata should contain all the counties with all characteristic Yak populations and with male and female populations. sampling population (n) should possibly be equal in all the strata. increase in "n" give you more accuracy.

I agree with Duraisamy that stratified sampling is the best option if you have population characteristic data in order to select individuals. However, if this is too expensive, you could use cluster sampling which would require you to select counties or districts at random then to take a random sample from within each one until you reach your quota sample size.
