Our lab had run some experiments to electrochemically degrade some compounds. When I plotted the data to see if the ractions were first or second order, the R-squared values were generally about 0.9 for both first and second order. How do I know which one is correct? Also, what would cause this to happen?

As already pointed out, you may have complex pathways, so it would be hard to distinguish between them.
Nevertheless, if a reaction has very similar behavior, one way to try to understand and define the correct one, is to fit the models of let say, solid kinetics (if a solid reaction is a concern) and by the residue error, determine the highest probability kinetic pathway, so its order.
It looks like, to me, you have a solid-solid reaction in an electrochemical pathway, so the reaction you are following should present some similarity to the already studied solid models.
By determining the best model which adjusts to your reaction, you have a higher probability order.
