I am trying to find out the degree days , heating degree days and the cooling degree days for Abu Dhabi. My question is how do I determine which base temperature value to choose for my calculations. I have come across different base temperature values for different regions. For Saudi Arabia I came across a base temperature value of 18.3, for Scotland the values were different for CDD and HDD values, any help in this regard would be helpful.
Degree days are not an absolute measure, referred to a constant temperature value, but always referred to a temperature goal that you are expected to set. Results are to be expressed in terms of: "xxxxx degree days at 17˚C" or "yyyyy degree days at 18˚C".

you need to know the thermal comfort temperature for different climate and different seasons.it varies from region to region. further you can use ASHRAE standard comfort and Adopted thermal comfort model for you selected region.

Heating and cooling degree days ar commonly established on a local basis. So is the base temperature . I understand that you have to dosuch standardt. Regarding the Emirates climate, you would have to work on data relevant to cooling degree days only. You may find similar data through the US ASHRAE standard of which some may be specific of hot and dry cimates found in some cities in desert from Nevada or New Mexico State for example. Anyway, I may suggest you to refer to 24 °C as a fair value for the cooling base temperature you are concerned with.

I suggest to take into account the ASHRAE or other standards and make your calculations not only for one case, regarding the base temperature, but for two, at least. So, you can also have a comparative perspective.
