I am new to SPSS and need some help. I have two categorical variables (var1 and var2) which are coded 0 - No, 1 - Yes. I am trying to assign participants to one of four groups based on these two variables.
The four groups would be:
Group 1 - var1 = 0, var2 = 0
Group 2 - var1 = 0, var 2 =1
Group 3 - var1=1, var2 = 0
Group 4 - var1 = 1, var2 = 1
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It can be done by computing a new variable using the COMPUTE command in SPSS. See

Here is a general approach you might find useful.
NEW FILE.
DATASET CLOSE ALL.
DATA LIST LIST / var1 var2 (2F1).
BEGIN DATA
0 0
0 1
1 0
1 1
END DATA.
* Let TempVar = var1*10 + var2.
COMPUTE TempVar = SUM(var1*10,var2).
* Let Group = the ranks of the TempVar values.
RANK VARIABLES=TempVar (A)
/RANK INTO Group
/PRINT=YES
/TIES=MEAN.
FORMATS Group(F1).
LIST.
DELETE VARIABLES TempVar.
LIST.
Output from the final LIST command:
var1 var2 Group
0 0 1
0 1 2
1 0 3
1 1 4
Number of cases read: 4 Number of cases listed: 4
But I have to ask why you want to do this. If it is because you want to include Group as an explanatory variable in an ANOVA model or regression model, note that you could include var1, var2 and their interaction instead.
