I need this to effectively and correctly calculate the Band-gap of a thin film.

Go to linear fit. In the input data, select 'select data from graph' from the drop down menu for range 1. Then select your data on your graph where you want to do the linear fit.

The tangent of a curve is in fact the derivative of the curve.
From the top menu:
Analisys - Matematics - Differentiate
Does it work?
I filled the x colum with values, for instance 1*0.1 form 1 to 50
I set colum B value as the square of x column B=Xcolum^2
Choosing colum B, Analysis, Mathematics differentiate a new column is generated
This column is the derivative (tanget) of column B.
If you plot it it is a line, since the derivative of x^2 is 2x, a line.
The slope of the tangent is the derivative of the curve. So make the derivative and the plot at the same point a straight line wit a slope of the derivative value at that point..
You can use a Gadget in origin 9Pro to get the tangent directly at any point. You can download the Tangent Gadget “Tangent.opx” file for tangent also from the origin site if you are using lower version of origin.
