I would like to know your experiences, who taught or helped you, or you learned alone
From my professor during my PhD studies. The most difficult is the "flow". People should be able to follow our ideas easily like if they are reading the story about what happened in the lab.
I wrote first article of life for a conference proceeding with the help of my respected supervisor (guruji) who taught me how to write a research paper.
First mentors through writing master's thesis and doctoral dissertation, later with senior professors, colleagues, but also reading other articles.
By reading exemplary good articles in my field of research, e.g. Nobel lectures in economics or research articles, which signalled a breakthrough in economic thought. I had not the chance to attend writer workshops or the like, because of my workload. The autodidactic road remained the only option.
Got the idea from online searching but got help with editing from a senior colleague.
I started as a help to my mentor with partual tasks and after some time endinf writing full article by myself
Dear Catia, you are an expert in digging into old memories. This is my conclusion after reading your questions and answers.
I learned writing by doing. My professor send me as a boy of 22 years to a conference about education in the North of the Netherlands. I had no experience with writing and presenting articles. He said write a few of papers and present them. I wrote them with a fountain pen. The day that I had to present my papers was very hot. I sweated. The result was that my text disappeared because of perspiration. I said to the audience, I have no idea what to tell. After saying that I remembered my text and presented it. This was a presentation about psychometric characteristics of the educational system. And I could prove that only students with a vocational background were able to finish a technical college. This was a terrible experience. The writing part was easy since psychometric presentations do have a clear structure. I hope that this answer pleases you Catia. All the best, Carl
My mentor has been my late uncle who died in 1973, As a cripple he had no means of going out to work. He self-taught himself on a variety of topics including math, science, linguistics and music. He started writing articles which were published and he began earning money for a living. As a child, I wrote several fictional stories. The first real article that I wrote was around 1984 when I published part of my graduate research work. Writing articles and reports came to me naturally perhaps somewhat related to early life influences.
My mentor insisted that I must read articles in the top-tier journals, at least one complete article a week, on a regular basis, before developing my first article as a lead author. That was best advice which exposed me to the the most frequent format of journal articles (IMRD-- Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion). It also helped me with how the leaders in the field structured their IMRD sections. I learned where (and if) good authors included the research questions, hypothesis, gaps in the existing literature, etc. How much details to include in each of the IMRD sections. I also learned (by reviewing good articles) how discussion and conclusions are framed and how to create relevance to your own study findings.
I like when the article is written with a huge number of details (some of them seem superfluous at first glance, but it is these “little things” that often lead to the main conclusions of the article).
The Japanese articles of the 60s-70s are written in this style. And I consider as my teachers Prof. Tatsuo Miyazawa and Prof. Hiroyuki Tadokoro, though we never met in person.
Small details are really very important. That is how articles were written at the beginning of the 20th century:
"... and at that moment my sulfuric acid was gone. When I returned from the warehouse, the synthesized substance precipitated in a bright green color crystals. And it turned out to be a completely new unknown substance"
From my professor during my PhD studies. The most difficult is the "flow". People should be able to follow our ideas easily like if they are reading the story about what happened in the lab.
It was a pressure to publish one article before submission of my Master's thesis.
I wrote one article several times following the style of the targeted journal. My supervisor corrected it for three times. Then finally, it was sent and published.
That idea helped me a lot during writing articles afterwards.
I learn through rejection of reviewer. I used submit and it used to be rejected with points to improve and again i use to submit
Of course it is difficult for the first time but read more than paper carefully and done.
In high school, we are required as a student to write philosophy articles in two hours and it is almost the same as a scientific article but without the summary and references. The rest is the same. My first article was not really difficult but the introduction was the hardest part.
In hard way ( by my self), and i learn that you must devide the paper in sections to make the writing easier...
I learnt during my graduation under the guidance of my Professor. Of course, initially studied many research paper, understood the structure of paper as well as flow of writing.
I wrote my first article with the guidance of my supervisor. Later on I went through various internationally acclaimed journals, books, abstracts etc to improve the skills.
Thanks Catia, Interesting question.
I am sharing my view, what my observation and mentors emphasise. i have been taught to do the following steps.
-selecting a topic.
-reading at least 10 published papers on same or similar topic.(to give yourself a confidence on subject)
-research question or research problem.(most important)
-Flow of the research process, and flow of the research topic selected)
-clarity of the type of experiment or research discussion to be done.
-finding out the shortcoming of the research ourselves. and listing them.
-preparing result / outcome summary.
-selecting or preparing a list of journals related to research.
-check for the style of research accepted format. e.g. APA.
-re checking .
-rechecking the reference in the end.
then submitting the article.
- based on reviewer comments , amending and re submitting.
It was difficult at first, particularly the discussion. There was always a temptation to over compare my findings with what other authors reported. Had loads of help from one of my professors in MSc. A nice guy, always responded to my emails, even during weekends. The work finally got published in a Springer open journal. From then, I've mostly been writing on my own and collaborating with others across my areas of interest.
At first I tried to write a draft and then I improve it through the comments of the reviewers ,and I do that many times until it is accepted for publication.
the great guidelines provided by my dear professor, the distinguished professor of linguistics, paved the way for me to write. then I continued conducting different studies. I pray for him all the time.
It is very interesting to know that a large percentage of you wrote your first article without help, we should give more support to the scholars and young researchers so that they can carry out their articles and publish them
Catia Cillóniz I strongly agree with you on the need to mentor our students and junior colleagues. I am teaching a course on public health practice trends but an implicit purpose is to actually mentor students about developing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publishing. Throughout the syllabus, I have assigned readings and other resources and have included assessments of writing ability. We have included three videos of role plays and shared a tool kit developed for "hand-holding" the students through development of a manuscript. This toolkit is available online, developed by the editorial team of a journal (I am part of the editorial team): https://jphmpdirect.com/2017/10/16/writing-boxes/
One of the largest assessment component is a ready-to-submit manuscript, with students as the leads and the instructor as a co-author.
I learnt writing with my mentor, sitting next to her, correcting my own writings. Comparing my articles with others I read. Also through the dialog with the reviewers in magazines.
I read a lot, probably more than 200 papers. At first I was not picky, I would read papers in broader areas before gradually narrowing down to papers in my field of interest. I paid attention to sentence structure and the plot. So finally when time came to right my own, I must admit it was not an easy task. This made appreciate the efforts of other researchers who were able to communicate their findings in peer-reviewed journals. I found myself updating different sections of the paper, ending up with an improved final draft that was submitted to a journal. Most importantly, the reviewers' comments refined the paper even better. By the time I submitted my paper to a 3rd journal following rejections in the first two journals, I was confident of its quality with respect to writing. The common comment from all the reviewers was that the paper was well written. It took a great deal of patience, constant reading and writing.
The more reading of published article will give us more experience about writing properly our articles.
Yes, looks like most of us took off during our postgraduate years, and our supervisors played a vital role in guiding us. Through the years, adhering to a particular journal style for writing, adds merit to our skills.
In the Research Training Program I attended during the first year of my PhD.
Certainly you learn by writing too.
Exchanging ideas in sites and platforms such as RG helps as well.
I also learned from a mentor. He had a special way of learning, helped me a lot and I'm very grateful to that, that's my dear professor @Daniel Petrovic
I agree with @Ondara Zablon Kerima, becuase it is exactly same with my experience of article writting. it is that somebody can learn from mentors or professors. But most of the time professors are quite busy to teach students how to write article. therefore, I recommend to read articles related to our specialization (b/ce the idea flow style of almost all article are similar). As time passess you will overcome everthing related to earticle writting.
While we were taught how to write in undergraduate school and in graduate school, I was really taught how to publish during my doctoral studies.
While my post graduate studies it is compulsory to publish research article s , therefore, I read lot up published articles and some how start writing research articles and also help my research major advisor.
I learned from my mentors on postgraduate studies. However, to provide scientific maturity on early stages, we are currently teaching for undergraduate main skills on publishing scientific papers with some positive results. Typically students get involved and highly motivated when they are working on projects. On courses, we recommend an excellent book from Robert A. Day and Barbara Gastel:
https://www.amazon.es/How-Write-Publish-Scientific-Paper/dp/0313391971
This book provides excellent recommendations to have a succesful published article.
I started to write articles at my own. But, it is true I learned many things from the reviewers comments.
I learnt how to conduct research and then report research in the form of scholarly articles from my greatest professor, Dr. Cendel A. Karaman during my MA studies. May he live long with health and happiness!
My case is quite exceptional. For me, unfavorable economic situations forced me into assisting and writing research reports for a fee to meet my educational needs and subsequently I transcended my experiences into article writings. A mentor was there to somehow guide me, however, ultimately, I learnt on my own through economic pressure. I am still in the learning process, through reading and reviewing good articles. Hoping to be up there with ease during further studies especially PhD!!!.
By exercise and by sitiations of anger reading articles of some colleagues.
How important is the experience, many of you have made a lot of effort to write your first article and that is very valuable , thanks for your comments
Writing articles is becoming a topic of interest to a large number of people in the current period, especially those seeking to master writing in a short period. Although the writing of articles, poems and novels of the talents enjoyed by some people, but there is a set of rules that advise So that any person can learn to write articles and even mastery, and always indicate a large number of senior authors not only at the level of the Arab world, but at the global level that the beginning of writing articles are by reaching a good idea and fun for the reader or issue worthy of discussion, which It is after Here is an attempt to codify a group of axes and elements that carry a great deal of fun and persuasion to the reader until the article meets all the conditions that must be met, and although the need to follow a large set of rules while writing, but not a requirement that all these rules are available in the entire article, An article is always characterized by a number of axes and a way of writing that makes it completely different from other articles, but the most important factor in all this is to try to reach a cause or idea that interested the attention of a large segment of citizens to be written about it so as to ensure the reader to be interested and follow up From Different segments of society by article
The goal of writing articles is to try to discuss a number of issues and files that are disturbing the society and occupy the interest of a large segment of citizens, whether political or social or otherwise, so it must be able to attract the article of interest of a large segment of readers, especially If the reader of this article is a user of the Internet, who are always looking for interesting articles and interesting, so it is recommended that there is great suspense in the writing of the article from the beginning until the last line in the article, so as not to feel bored during the reading and thus a state of dislike of the article , Next to that he promises One of the goals of writing articles is to analyze the reality in the sense that the article gives an analytical picture of what is going on and happening in the community during the current period, and give a future look at the events expected to occur in the future both near and far, and this requires a great deal of knowledge and analysis of events in the community and linking them In a good way until the article comes out in an interesting and convincing way
Expanding reading and knowledge: Senior writers always advise that everyone should expand reading in various fields so that he can have a great knowledge base that enables him to write articles in an interesting way and with a great deal of new information for any reader, which ensures that the article is able To attract large segments to read the article, so the element of reading is one of the most important rules for writing articles, as the accumulation of information gives the writer a great ability to excel in writing the article without the rest of the book.
I learned to write research by studying the method of writing research during the master's study. I also learned how to choose the design of experiments and the statistical analysis of these experiments through my study of the design and analysis of agricultural experiments. My greatest success in this field is that I have a linguistic potential and a wonderful way of writing scientifically
The article: Writing the essay is not easy work, it needs many skills that any learner can acquire, and has methods of writing the article, whether political, economic, or social. The scientific article is known as the way of presenting the scientific facts through a scientific approach based on absolute objectivity. The scientific article has the truth of the facts in it, its reliance on numbers and statistics, and its use of clear scientific language
Among the steps of writing the scientific article: Read in all aspects of the subject: The writer must live a good argument and put himself in the reader's place and looking for what is upset by the reader and away from him and do everything that benefits everyone, so that he can formulate a scientific article to achieve the desired success, The article is a language of communication between the writer and reader, seeking through his article sometimes to communicate the idea and circulation, and sometimes criticizes the status quo, and sometimes tries to influence the reader's ideas and views of the During the truth show T-owned, and of interest to the reader
One of the steps of writing the scientific article: Be close to your readers: The successful writer is someone who addresses people to the extent of their minds, and do not get over them with his ideas, and does not use his language skills through the selection of words difficult to understand and carry more than meaning. In order for the article to be good, the writer must master the language used to speak to the reader. Knowing the language that the reader understands makes it easier for the writer to identify the subject, the ideas, and the persuasive methods he will use to present the information.
One of the important steps in writing the article is to identify the target group so as to know the method used, it is not correct to address young people in the language of children, it is also correct to address older people in the language of youth, In the language of politics, so readers should be categorized according to their interests and minds.
The correct article is the article that consists of the following: - Contains a comprehensive introduction to the subject of the article, which is a brief summary of the article, or a short article about the large article can the reader to understand the content of the subject raised by the writer in The article without resorting to complete the reading, and the introduction should not be without the words of motivation that the reader wants to complete. - The content of the article must be new and of special importance, that is, the subject must touch the concerns of the reader, and addresses the general scientific issues in the community, which needs the reader to provide him with information that helps them to understand the scientific events that surround him, Important facts, and accurate statistics that help the reader to reach the truth and develop it in a comfortable way without collisions with logic. - The conclusion of the article has its own formula containing the author's solutions to the problem he posed, or the scientific steps to address the issue under discussion
Enhance your article with some statistical data: If your article talks about a scientific subject, you can search for the latest statistics and scientific research that has been done in this subject, and put part of it in your article as a martyr and proof of the validity of your words with the source, of course, so as not to put yourself under the law
Personally, I learned to write articles by reading lots of other papers/articles, determined what stood out to me about the writing in those most easily read, and then practicing and practicing again. Two other factors were important: I think the hardest task in writing is to actually SIT DOWN and write...hard to get started. Second, you have to have resilience...don't be offended by the criticisms and the editorial suggestions of others...getting feed back about your writing and taking these criticisms seriously is the only way to get better.
I learnt by myself through reading the articles of other scientists
I learned a little of academic writing during my studies. I had a few very fruitful supervisors and some that did not help/support/teach me anything at all. As I developed as an independent consultant in statistics, methodology and scientific writing, I had the chance to reflect a lot not only on the writing itself, but the didactics necessary to teach good writing.
As some posts mention here, too, writing depends on many factors (audience, topic, method etc) which may seem to make the process more complex at first. But when deeper insight into the different forms of scientific writing emerges, the previously ill-received constraints evolve into much-appreciated guidelines.
When I was completing my second master's degree, I had an eye-opening moment when my second supervisor, Eric, (whom I haven't seen before that one decisive meeting) listened to me. He knew that I was already starting to give consultations and asked me what I normally do ... what I would do when someone has a complex design with different parts, say A-B-C ... I replied truthfully, that I would check for parallel structure of these parts throughout all sections.
There was one minute of silence filled with an emphatic smile from Eric. Then it dawned on me, that I merely did not apply the same scrutiny and pragmatism to my writing that I applied to my clients' writing. I hastily thanked Eric, went home, corrected my complete thesis in a month and finished with flying colours ...
This and many events that followed (with my clients), opened my eyes to the need for developing supervising skills, science didactics if you will, in academia. A mere quantity of "experience", degrees or goodwill won't do.
Decidete a escribir el primero, y veras que lo logras a pesar de que el arbitraje se encargue de señalarte mejoras es la mejor via, DECIDIRSE
It is difficult to answer briefly and succinctly this type of question. Many factors have certainly influenced this type of skill. First of all, doctoral studies, Professor who was my Promoter during doctoral studies, besides experience and many years of perfecting the research, editing and writing of scientific texts. This type of skill is the resultant of many objective factors, but also devoted to a large amount of time to learn about research methodologies, and to improve the writing skills in the field of writing scientific articles. I invite you to the discussion.
Firstly, by reading..Then, instructions from the professors of my university..
I learned it by reading previous published papers and other online tools.. My first paper was published in 2014 after a hard work..
I learned to write research by reading books that are interested in studying the scientific research method, as well as by studying the method of writing research published in magazines with good impact factor , studying the style and language of writing research as well as possess an excellent language in writing researches.
Give yourself time to write the article. If you do not, haste will make you create an article that does not represent your real ability to write.
For more information on primary research methods and databases, visit specialized websites on this topic, or get a copy of the Surveyor's Guide, a well-known instructional guide on how to investigate information and facts in English.
Reading many articles and scientific papers as well as some tips from the
supervisor .
My first writing was during my Bachelor's degree and I was required to graduate writing the graduation project and write an article to be published in a scientific journal. This request was from the supervisor's professors. There were many mistakes that my supervisor was able to correct. Then the article was published in an international scientific journal . Then I was able to write many articles during and after the completion of the study of the Master's thesis and also have been published in many scientific journals, local and global, where I learned a lot of my professors in the Department of Physics/ Collage of Science and benefited many of my colleagues in and outside the Department of Physics. After completing my Ph.D I was able to write scientific articles on a high level in terms of language and science and published in prestigious scientific journals and through these articles I was able to communicate with many researchers and academics in various local and international universities and scientific institutions and institutes in many and many countries of the world and participated in these articles in many scientific conferences have been invited to it. Through the experience that I have after this scientific march I will invest in helping my students who supervised it.
You can write articles by following the steps of scientific research, which includes selecting a topic to solve a problem and then collect the sources that belong to the subject and read these sources well then work on research and linking the results reached through the search.
A large amount of research strongly suggests that we learn to
write by reading
By reading a large amount of articles. It'll be resolved with the passage of time.
To write a scientific article it is necessary to read many publications related to the subject of the article. This helps to better understand the problem.
I learned through teaching and continuing reading and writing in the field of articles
By practice. Only way to develop is by writing, reviewing & improving with time.
Trial and error. However, I cannot deny that I found brilliant editors helped me much .
I learned to write a paper with the help of my colleagues at the university. This at first and then developed my abilities while continuing to write and publishing and I still try to acquire the skills of writing the article in the best formula
I learned to write an article with personal discussion with students, teachers and specially hot discussion with resource person in different seminars and conferences. I had a big hot discussion with a resource person in a training programme in which he almost challenged me. I used to find the drawbacks in teachers while teaching and found many drawbacks in textbooks also, which provoked me to write something on existing matters.
This succeeds through practice and sufficient experience. A research study is not an essay in the style of Montaigne, but should be structured methodically according to the usual scheme: Question (with the formulation of hypotheses on the object of research), description of the methods of hypothesis testing (with information on the nature of the sample and the extraction of relevant statements), presentation of results (the answer to the hypothesis dressed as a question), discussion of the results (which does not forget deviations from the expected results and takes into account further aspects), summary.
