So during meiosis, we know that homologous chromosomes (one from dad, one from mom) pair up and for a tetrad for then division and result in haploid gametes.

But during mitosis, we know that homologous chromosomes are still there, they still have 1 set from mom, 1 set from dad, but the chromosomes only line up as a single line. The homologous chromosomes don't pair up during mitosis. Does anyone know what mechanism ensures for this to happen? How come during mitosis, homologous chromosomes don't pair up? What prevent them?
