I understand, peizo transducers can't generate ultrasonic waves in air due to 1) large acoustic impedance mismatch between PZT (~106 Rayl) and air (400 Rayl) and 2) attenuation of sound waves in air, which increases with increasing frequency.

How cMUT is able to overcome these problems?

Is it because the acoustic power generated is proportional to the peak displacement of the vibrating structure (here a thin membrane), which is limited in PZT?
