There are various ways including presentations at conferences, journal articles,and requests for one-on-one meetings to explain your work. When approaching a potential mentor, have a short description of your work ready either written or as an elevator speech. Make an effort to relate your work to theirs.

I would suggest a layered mentorship. Look locally first (not necessarily your dept but someone locally that can offer ongoing and face to face support). Then potentially regional mentor and more wide spread dissemination. Going to conferences is a wise starting point and sometimes a poster presentation where people come to your stand is a useful method to meet like minded people
