GPT models (as opposed to the website called CHAT GPT) in an agentic framework with a graph knowledge-base allowing semantic and topological mapping developed for one narrow field - like a PhD student - are performing well now. There's a few caveats such as knowledge base needs SME input and the validation step of any agentic systems needs validation with SMEs.
