In order to keep the interest of the audience it is good to include interactive content, as well as being interactive as a presenter at all time. E.g. make a joke, ask questions to get the audience involved, etc. Most importantly have a passion about what you are presenting, cause if you yourself are bored of the topic, and you can't find an interesting way to present it, then it is impossible for anyone to follow..
Good graphics can go a long way, as well! Use graphics that help guide your audience through the presentation, graphics that serve as a clear supplement to your talk instead of just a redundancy with the information you'll be saying.
Set up interesting questions or challenges, paradoxes at the beginning of each section that you go on to explain / answer in the presentation. What's your story? The strength and interest of the storyline keeps audience attention, and small stories and examples keep this vivid. Use images to link to the message, rather than merely illustrate content. The questions link your content to the audience's world and concerns. If interaction does this, it is useful, but beware because if not, it's a distraction - the audience might enjoy the moment, but won't retain the message.
Then, a presenter can follow some tactics to attract the attentions of participants during his/her presentation. For example,
1) If a presenter uses Power Point, she/he should only give a brief information (a short sentence) in every slide. In other words, slides should be lean.
2) Presenter shouldn't read slides word by word. In every slide, presenter contributes to the related slide with his/her words/ideas.
3) If presenter share some theoretical knowledge, he/she can support them with some interesting examples, stories and/or metaphors.
4) In some parts, presenter may include participants into presentation by asking their ideas / experiences.
5) During presentation, learning of names of participants and adressing to them with their names may also attract the attentions of them.
However, as emphasized by theory of rhetoric, a skillful orator is the person who adapts his/her speech-presentation in terms of context. Therefore, presenter should have knowledge about characteristics of participants as much as possible. Therefore, it is fair to say that some rules are common for almost all presentations, some tactics may require adaptation to conditions.
I agree with the comments previously made here by other researchers including @AnastasiaPampouchidou Anastasia Pampouchidou . One of my favorites to speak on this topic is @Richard Felder. He has published many related writings and I had a chance to hear him speak in workshop. His ResearchGate page can be found at: Richard M. Felder An example of his writing is shown at: Article Want your students to think creatively and critically? How a...
The first example (above) illustrates the expected outcomes in learning. Strategies for getting there are sometimes covered in literature under "active learning" strategies.
A second example is
Felder, Richard M., and Roger G. Hadgraft. "Educational practice and educational research in engineering: Partners, antagonists, or ships passing in the night?." Journal of Engineering Education 102, no. 3 (2013): 339-345.
These emphasize the difference between traditional methods such as "deductive" (theory followed by example) vs. "inductive" learning where curiousity is motivated by first presenting a problem, data or example. More details can be seen in third example with citation:
Prince and Felder (2006). Inductive Teaching and Learning Methods: Definitions, Comparisons and Research Bases, J. of Engineering Education.
Following these methods emphasizing ways to engage students, we have opportunity to help move beyond "remember and understand" at the base of Bloom's Taxonomy, upward to include analyze, synthesize and create.
Hopefully this can help readers in their future strategizing about presentations as well.
I agree with others above that reading from PowerPoints should be minimised and interactive content and activities as well as humour helps but the presentation also has to present something of personalised or professional interest too. If speaking to groups of professionals or business executives inserting something relevant to their work helps get their interest usually. Humour can be good but can also backfire if a nervous presenter fluffs the punchline or drones on in a monotonous manner for example. So changing the rhythm and pace of your speech too helps as well as a confident appearance i.e. NOT perpetually looking down at notes and mumbling:face the audience. It is something of a truism that most of the time, most of them also want to avoid their own embarrassment(e.g. at having attended a boring event) and wish to be seated at an interesting , thought-provoking presentation. Also, as Stephen Linstead has said above provoke some discussion, even some dissenting voices can be useful in motivating the audience, though not if these are the overwhelming majority of questions- as sometimes happens with challenging topics. The opposite ie total silence from the audience can be equally damaging to the presenter´s ego and reputation.
Here is how you can give a wonderful presentation :-
1) Know your Content/Story/Ideas : While developing a Business PowerPoint presentation, its very important to first understand what story or content you want to present to your audience.
2) Know your audience : Another important aspect of your presentation is to understand your audience. Try and present your content in such a way that would keep the audience engaged and interested. Use more visuals than text considering the 3 second rule ( Each slide should pass the glance test: Your audience should be able to comprehend your slide in 3 seconds).
3) Designing your presentation : Try and follow minimalistic approach where less is more – The 10/20/30 Rule of PowerPoint by Guy Kawasaki ( 10 slides, 20 Minutes, 30 Point Font ).
4) Deliver Your Presentation : Study shows that a whopping 93 percent of audience is influenced based on Visual and Vocal elements of communication. Specifically, the study showed that 55 percent of audience influence was based on Visual and 38 percent was based on Vocal. Visual means key things like eye contact, body movement, and gestures. These are the things that the audience sees you do with your eyes, your hands, your arms, and your entire body. Vocal is an important aspect for inspiring and engaging audiences. To create an impact, be clear, natural and expressive. Considering that your goal is to be heard and trusted by your audience, forget discretion and speak in a way such that everybody in the audience can hear you.
5) Hunt for Professional PowerPoint Templates : Hunting for the right PowerPoint template is a challenge for many business professionals before their next big meeting. A good presentation can make or break a deal. Therefore, business professionals need a one stop shop for all the business PowerPoint templates to create a great presentation. Online library like Professional PowerPoint templates & Slides - SlideUplift.com provides access to professional PowerPoint templates for business executives.
A blurring of the speaker's goal may lead to a distraction from the audience, in one way or another. The task of the platform will be impossible, if the speaker himself does not know what he is talking about. The blurring of the target may generate a misunderstanding among the listener. For example, when someone calls you and you are about to come out of the board and say, "I want to know what you think about a particular subject." Without explaining what he wants
The distribution of consideration during the conversation sharpens the attention of listeners, so it is advised to carefully look at those who feel that it has been a little distracted, it will restore it to focus on you. Scientific studies have shown that transient eye movements of the speaker are the most effective way to show interaction with listeners. In an article entitled "In the blink of an eye," Mr. Chollar says that "an increase in the eye may mean that the listener is in a stage of psychological or physical stress such as anxiety, anger or boredom." The low eyelash rate "sometimes indicates that the platform needs more information or is listening to something that needs greater focus." And since the experience is a good proof, notice how eyelashes stop the eyes of the praise of the movement in a way that suggests to us the desire for more praise and praise, try and notice the difference
The mention of facts and stories at the beginning of the conversation attracts attention. When voices rise in a heated debate about "the cause of illiteracy in the Arab countries," for example, the best way to attract attention is to say: Do you know that illiteracy has fallen to one percent in a year? And you will find that the heads have told you to learn more, and here comes your role in providing them with quick sentences and short facts to ensure that the attention of listeners is kept and they are prompted to listen more seriously
The best way while preparing presentation you have less no of slides i. e. maximum 10 slides. It has a summerized points which you may elaborate as per your own presentation skill. If people fill boaring dont go too much elaboration just give some supportive examples (If it is audiovideo or in cartoon picture ) they are quite effective for attaintion of listners or audience.
