What could be the maximum distance that one can control a UAV from?
The range of a wireless link can be increased by:
increasing the transmit amplifier power Pt,
Increase the sensitivity of the receiver by using low noise figure low noise amplifier.
Increase the band width keeping the bit rate constant. This can be accomplished by using FSK and increase the frequency deviation df,
One can use forward error correction techniques such as the RS coding or the constitutional coding
using multiple antennas in form of diversity.

The range can be increased by using high gain antennas, using high transmitted power (range is proportional to the square root of power, double the power, range increases by around 41%), operate at low frequency etc.
By bidirectional data link with guidance and control method we can increase the communication range.
Really depends on the intended mission of the aircraft.
If you require constant manual control, all those means that have been previously stated, which essentially boost the traditional control link or provide range extending relays will give you the response time and data bandwidth necessary to pull off what you want to achieve. To operate successfully you will need to set up an appropriate network to get a signal to-and-fro within the entire operating area.
If you intend on creating an autonomous vehicle, which only requires sporadic signals to receive high level instructions with minimal data, you could go with tapping into the satcom network which will allow you to control it anywhere in the world without having to set up any transceiver stations of your own.
It depends on your communication medium. If you send the link via satellite, you can control it from anywhere on the planet.
Wireless communication depends on the frequency you are using. With 5Ghz we would be looking at a short distance compared to 2Ghz. And also if you can get a wireless devices that can communicate at a lower frequency just like the FM bands or AM bands. this would go very far. By satelite, a very good signal that is not interrupted by rain, snow or changes in the atmosphere is a plus but you have to sacrifice to the time delay. 3G and 4G would be best option but it depends on the telcos because I am assuming you would like a video feedback of where the UAV/Drone is going and what its doing at a particular time.
Let suppose if we use satellite link for UAV. Is it possible to see FPV ??
For me it would be quite difficult to control the dynamics of a UAV,and to achieve a certain goal.

Range in radio communication basically depends on the SNR at the receiver. Now, to improve the SNR, the following can be tried.
1. The carrier frequency can be changed. If the frequency is less, the range will be more.
2. The Antennae at both the transmitter and the receiver will give improved performance if they are directional.
3. The receiver performance will improve if low noise amplifier can be used in the front end.
4. The last but not the least is the dimension of the antennae. They will give better results if the dimension is more (5/8 wavelength rather than 1/4 wavelength).
You might consider how the US communicated with its drones in Afghanistan, they were flown from Nevada. The answer is that the full system has to be considered, not just a single link.

The problem is when the communication is bidirecctional. But if only is unidirectional from the RF control to the robot you can use a power amplifier of the RF signal.

The communication range of Satellite is large ,However its very expensive.Whereas,2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz is normally limited to 100 - 200 meters..If somebody want to Use a UAV within 5 to 15 km range.Then what would be the possible solution?
Some out-of-the-box ideas would be to use a network of drones flying in linear formation with TXRX units to pass through data; consider improving SNR with phase sensitive detection, with units using accurate timers to chop the signals; launch a balloon with networking gear of your own...!
The simplest solution would be to use a parabolic antenna but probably you need to motorise it to automatically track the drone using the return signal as a guide.
Match the polarization of the antenna on the Drone to the controller. i.e. Vertical to Vertical or Horizontal to Horizontal
I'd use commercial 3G-4G mobile phone networks in order to send and receive short communication lines that help upload discrete commands (eg. Speed, Altitude, Go to a preset waypoint, Cancel mission, Go back home....) and download basic status information. Wouldn't work for downloading real time imaging, but maybe acquiring some basic environmental information.
The non-exhaustive list of factors that can affect the range are as follows:
1) increasing the transmit power level
2) using directional antennas and beamforming
3) high-sensitivity receivers
4) low-frequency transmitters with large antenna size
You can vary prefered parameters based on your application and requirements.

If you are talking about ready-made radio stations, you need an environment without radio interference, clear sky, direct visibility. If you want to develop a radio station with a longer range, then you need to use a directional antenna and tonal communication.
