This issue should involve a social pact between rulers, researchers and the population. Each member of this social chain must have the ethical commitment to use the conditions of its competence to build sustainability. Particularly: Governors should make decisions based on good sense and results of applied research. Researchers must increasingly be imbued with a responsible spirit of uniting their personal talent and ego to generate information and technologies useful to the population. And the population in all its production and consumption chains must always use the triple policy of reduction, reuse and recycling as a natural day-to-day practice. Two examples of applied sustainability: (1) use of the composting technique of agricultural and urban waste for the production of organic fertilizers; (2) the use of agricultural hanging gardens in buildings of large cities with the production of private gardens that will serve simultaneously as healthy food and improvement of the ambient temperature. Anyway, this question is a good proposal to research of theses in various areas and possible publications of articles. Congratulations on the depth of the question. I tried to put some quick ideas from my scientific experience.
