Rural youth recently reported that access to information, lack of credit and negative perceptions around farming are the leading reasons why African young people are leaving small farming at such alarming rates.
The comments came during the 2016 Youth Agribusiness, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship Summit on Innovation (YALESI 2016), held in Dakar, Senegal from 29 to 31 in March.
The conference – which gives young African men and women living in rural areas the opportunity to discuss key issues and learn new skills – is an initiative that came out of the IFAD-supported Global Youth Innovation Network.",...
Aging farming population, lack of youths in agriculture, cheaper imported products and the list can go on. If we educate youths on the importance of sustaining the industry and encourage and mentor them there will be no agriculture in certain small islands.
I think there are many reasons why people leave agriculture as a discipline or as a practice. The major reason being economics. People must be able to live well and take care of their responsibilities, this to a greater extent determines if they'd remain in agriculture.
I know people who have left agriculture for lack of a good pay package at the end of the month, some because of the lack of economic security, some because of the large capital investment for the purchase of agric implements that will boost production and increase the profit margin, some because the profit is not immediate and because the profit grows over time, some because they could not access the information on accurate weather forecasts and extension services, and lastly, some because of loan facilities.
Myriads of reasons, but there could be mixes of these responsible per case.
In my country, which was one of the first countries in the world to rely on agriculture, now the majority of peasants left the profession for several reasons:
1 - not to protect local plantations through high prices compared to the importer
2 - Turning the peasants into government jobs
3 - Conversion of agricultural land to residential land
There are large number of factors. Some of them have already been explained. These reasons vary from region to region and state to state and country to country. Few reasons I am mentioning are:
1. Moving of some members of family to other places from native place
2. Less interest in the agriculture
3. Net output not profitable
4. Not keeping cattle say Cow Buffalo etc., so cycling of grass and other products not happening
5. Availability of food grains and other items at ease
6. Government helps in food sector, providing foods at cheap rates
7. Laziness of people (more on phone and TV)
8. Extensive use of urea killed water resources
9. It is machine dependent, Tractor etc. some what costly affair
I0. Spread of beeds- bad grass over entire agriculture land
Friends, one thing I would like to add that in our side agriculture is dependent mostly on rain, overall output is less than input (money spent). Still our family is doing agriculture, just to be in Honorable position in society so that people do not comment on dry fields (ancestral property) as some family members are staying in native village and agricultural land. Overall it is too expensive, cheap manpower is also not available and globalization has led to availability of almost everything at door step at ease.
11. Easy avilability of cooking gas, has led to increase in Jungles, this leads to increase in wild animals and they do too much damage to the fields. So our side people are avoiding agriculture as wild animals destroy the fields and finally nothing is obtained.
