I think this is essential and critical issue for nurses to be competent in their communication with their clients. From observations to the nurses perfomance and interaction with the patients, it seems there is a significant probelm here. A sisgnifcant protion of nurses dont communicate appropriately with patients, dont provide adequate information for them, dont dedicate time for listening and advocating.

There should be a major revision for nurses role and to develop guidlines to rectify this issue.

Health care must be safe .This can only be achieved through  effective communication.Effective communication during hand offs, when communicating critical results  and during verbal ,telephone orders   and during patient and family education (JCIA Standard 5th Edition )

Effective communication can be achieved by having policies and procedures in place .

Training has helped improve communication among the nurses .

Assessment of the patient and family before communicating to them ,this will help the nurse identify any barriers to communication and address to them.

in my experience, I have used lecturing, especially workshops, role-play and group discussions with students at the level of master and second-level and even with professionals. I am now moving to the narrative nursing, that is, the use of the narrative especially in listening to the patient, in investigating and in therapeutic education

Good communication is essential between nurses and patients.  In order to develop communication in nursing practice takes practice.  I am an LPN and currently working toward my RN degree.  I spent twenty years of my life in music and entertainment.  It only takes a moment to make a first impression with a stranger and make them feel comfortable.  I take the time to make a patient “Feel good!”  This is very important to me.  I have been a patient.  I have had doctors and nurses with poor communication skills.  I have to say, as a patient, I spent the majority of my time with nurses and they earned my trust by listening to me and spending time with me.  I take the time to review a patient’s chart and consider their culture, values and beliefs before I meet them.  Above all, I am not afraid to ask them questions; this is the only way to get to know someone.  All you have to do is take the time to ask and actively listen to another human being.  Every single person deserves the same care and time.  Before I walk into a patient’s room, I think to myself, “This is someone’s mother, father, sister, brother, etc…”  It takes time to develop communication skills and make someone feel comfortable and trust you and we have to do this in a very short time initially.  I think I have a ‘way about me’ that makes someone feel at home.  I believe each nurse needs to find their way to a trusting nurse-patient relationship.  My experience has been to treat every human being they way I would want to be treated.  “We are not all cut from the same cloth, but together we make a better quilt.” (Linda Poindexter)

A look at why physicians tend to undervalue the importance of nursing

Both verbal and non verbal communication is important in the initiation and maintenance of a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. Understanding patient expectations and their level in the health-illness continuum, cultural competence and emotional intelligence all play a role in contextualizing communication in nursing practice. Nurses and patients will always have individual characteristics/ attributes but the nurses' training and education equip them with affective skills that are so imperative in communication with vulnerable individuals.

I like your question about nurse patient communication. I met many situations during my clinical training with my students at OBGYN department. Many situations interpreting from my point of view due to patient fear feeling and nurse negligence or her routine work as a robot without any communication So, the ice should be break between nurse & patient, the nurse needs updating courses on good communication to communicate well with her/his patients & to put in her mind that every patient is uniqe/ individual traits to deal with & absolutely, not considered as a routine work

I mean practical updating through workshops & real training on communications.

In addition to another idea .... What about Radio alarm in hospital if we used it as a resource of broadcasting of positive messages encourage the nurses to follow the rules of communication ( this an idea of research I was intend to work on it but I found obstacles to do it

I think it is better to work on a culture creation in nurses to pay attention to their patients as an ethical value.

Communication is one of the most important characteristic values in nursing, more especially that nurses deal with vulnerable groups (patients). Basic nursing curricula must not only focus on teaching and evaluation of cognitive and psycho-motor skills, but also affective skills. The latter must be further developed in practice by means of short courses and workshops. Nurses need to be more culturally sensitive and demonstrate an acceptable degree of emotional intelligence. When nurses communicate with patients their relationship  must be that of partners so as to enhance mutual trust and respect.
