I agree with Misha, the picric acid solution you use for the assay is at a low concentration and hence not dangerous as a concentrated stock solution might be.
However there are other assays including use of a CN specific electrode.
You can often purchase picric acid as a 1.3% or 2% solution and in that form there is no special hazard. Your university might permit you to obtain those stocks which can be used for the traditional assay.
