Louis has provided an innovative step to improve research networking across the globe. I wish RG would implement such initiative. Regarding the raising on funds I think to get handsome grant we don't only need effective research proposal but also skilled research team that can draft and motivate funding agencies for filthy budget.

While this is a very small amount, it is a real example on how she managed to raise some fund with her ideas and the indiegogo without wasting time to write proposals to several funding agencies. I think there are no funding constraints for a good research idea/proposal anywhere in the world including developing countries. Make sure that you address the priority and thrust areas identified by a particular funding agency

In developing countries, Ideas are always hijacked and grants are always given to half baked research scholars who might later end up not doing anything. The possibility of being funded is very slim and it is a great challenge to under developed nations. Hard work is rarely encouraged.

Most foundations are focused on assisting researchers from developed and developing nations and not third world nations.......funds are needed to encourage TRADITIONAL ENGINEERING
This question is country dependent. In an international net like this, it is very difficult to give solutions that fit everywhere. Nowadays, due to the crisis, in general, funds are restricted in a lot of countries. We are living a bad moment.
The people with money to fund projects have no good place to put their funds right now. They have no way to find the projects that are viable and RG should be a good platform for that. This is a great idea and I would support working to that end.

I think I can see it from two different perspectives, I lived in Mexico where most of research is done by universities , in that case, there are programs that are open every year to get funds to do research. Sometimes, there are specific topics, some times a good project can be proposed, but of course in a country where there is not enough funds for research is a hard thing, but it's possible,
Living in the United States is different, there are many labs around the country, you can get fund by government, private companies, or specific organizations. The number one issue of course is having a good project, not only a good idea. A friend of mine explained me this way: don't dream with Cinderella castle, think all the actions to build a new Disney world!.
Any place, will ask you the right amount of information, actions and of course the cheapest way to do it, since when you get that road, you are playing the game of business.
The new way, as people before me has replied is finding public funds, but the hardest part of it is convince people your project is useful to them.
But everything is possible!
Well, I guess one could work for research funding through the traditional routes. That is, via government, commercial, or private organizations. In the US, government and commercial are the largest sources for research funding. In comparison, private funding for research pales in comparison. That's not to say there isn't significant funds available from the private side.
But, as others have said here, is there an alternative? What if you need 'just a little money' or perhaps your research is a little 'out there' and you're having trouble convincing people of the merits of your research? What then?
Maybe we should take a look at the crowdsourcing derived concept of 'crowdfunding'. This idea is not new. The earliest examples run as far back as the 17th century (book publishing). Another famous example of crowdfunding is how the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty was financed. Government funding was declined so Pulitzer (yes, the editor) raised more than $100,000 in just six months to complete the funding of the pedestal.
In the age of the internet, ideas can get global exposure. There are even philanthropic crowdfunding organizations. IP rights and IP exposure are issues with crowdfunding. But, if you're a researcher in a corporation, the company owns all your ideas anyway. The same is true if you work in a University setting.
Still, crowdfunding of businesses or philanthropic organizations is becoming more and more popular as an alternative. I can't say if crowdfunding of scientific research has been done before, but it seems to me that it's worth a good hard look.

The problem is that many excellent basic research projects never become a reality because of the rising competition in the grant process. Here is developed a vicious circle. Because more and more researchers are applying for grants, the chances of winning decrease.
Usually research funding is awarded to experienced researchers with strong CV. It is very difficult for young people to compete successfully.

It depends , what kind of project that will examine to under gone.
In an usual way, money is tightly holded by rules and regulations, its not our pocket money for what we want to do.perhaps we can say by politics and politicians or the people who makes critical politics.
In a way it goes on Philosophical touch too, Still developing countries and poor countries worrying about many problems,and people don't know ..what to do.
Lack of resources..even every one have their science ,which does not have any boundaries..Imagination completely implements normality...but crisis from money.
Some organizations will do funding for a while depends on the research problem...Example The New york academy of sciences invites project proposals and novel ideas for sustainable projects..like How we can provide Dietary proteins to malnutrition kids.
In such conditions...Poor countries unable to provide sufficient proteins by choice with fish,meat cereals..the only way to give artificial food..which covers all the need.
This is also a project,..we must work on this to get an idea and to implement to find the results.
On conclusion i would like to say..researchers and The universal government must be free to do this kind of problems,,Research should not stop because lack of money.
Some hrs back i red about fecal transplantation to arrest gut associated diseases and gut inflammatory diseases.The project is simple but the impact was huge,,,was published in journal Science.
Need to develop,and must give chances to every country by huge govt funding agencies to monitor the world level research.

The challenge on research funding you have highlighted is very true and critical and, in fact, is universal be it developed or underdeveloped or developing country. However, one very important consideration for a project to be funded externally is the level of scientific merit of the idea, the feasibility, the expected impact [that is, not just scientific but also show enough level of positive social, economic, political (talking about image-building for the funder) and environmental benefits]. It must also align with the existing strategic plan of the organization as well as your organization.
That way, the proposal or project shall become appealing to several donors because, it is seen to be sustainable since it is pro-poor and has the potentials to reduce poverty, lead to enterprise development, result to sustainable livelihood, and meeting the aims and objectives of the prospective funder. Money does not come easy and funders want to get marginal benefit for every unit of currency expended on a project.
But, above all, it is very important to work as a team or better still to be part of a research group and/or be affiliated to a centre or institute where your idea can be hosted. This is because, most conventional funders seem more comfortable funding research groups, centres or institutes knowing that this will encourage collaboration and partnership (even at the local, national, regional, global levels), and cross-fertilization of ideas. Furthermore, it should be seen to bring about the much needed social capital for greater impact knowing that the findings (outcomes and outputs) would be public goods.

You know in country like ours today that is impregnated by corruption whereby hard work is never endorsed which has led to the incessant brain drain in the country and Africa at large....my big question is 'how do we checkmate the effect of corruption on science and technology". again, you are very correct about your observation on corruption and especially under situations where a project gets funded simply because, the one to make the decision knows one person or the other. I think, participating in mutual -country to country- international projects is very important and productive. I participated in Russian-American scientific programs, and my participation in the greatest scientific event was paid, because I received a grant (it had been rather difficult - it was a competition among a lot of greatest persons). Besides, participation in the international conferences under American universities is extremely productive. As a rule, American intellectual elite can appreciate your abilities, interests, talents,hard work and gives all the opportunities for your self-actualization. It supports you from the materialistic point of view, too- for ex.,"early birds" payment, publications, review, cultural program etc.Mainly, it depends on your efforts and your intellectual contribution into the common intellectual environment.
