Journalism has larger role to play in healthy democratic society, so the journalists need to be professional. As it appears, they quite often twist and represent the facts in a way to make it more attractive and catchy. A few questions that comes to my mind which I would like to share here:
1) Can we call journalism as a profession?
2) Does journalism as an occupation has professional standards, codes of conduct, and professional values and ideology?
3) Do they vary across societal contexts (e.g. National culture, societal sub-culture etc. ?
4) What is desired of them to demonstrate Professionalism better?
Your question is also part of the professional debate in the media in my country. I think that the level of professionalism in the media is related to several factors, including experience in democracy, tradition in information, the level of economic development, the opening of the society and the existence of a critical public opinion or the schools of journalism. Some such elements missing in the new democratic societies. However, my suggestion is reading books for two titles: “Understanding media” by Marshall Mcluhan and “The elements of journalism” by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel.
