In conceptual design phase dead load, live load ,earthquake load, and wind load are the must important factors to fix a initial size of column and shear wall, In my research work i want to develop a generalization network that could find the most appropriate size of column, thickness of shear wall,
Now i have a question to those experienced engineer , which factors like seismic zone,wind categories, live load, dead load, strength of concrete, strength of steel reinforcement, are the most effecting factors to choose the initial size of these components??
Not an easy issue... Lot of parameters are involved and surely an iterative procedure is needed. Prior, a structural typology must be defined. This is done based on seismic zone, wind zone, use and height of the building, suitable construction techniques, etc. Then, the next step is to analyze dead and live loads in order to define minimum element dimensions and also to define appropriate concrete quality. Only then you are able to analyze total shear and to begin improving structural stiffness and ductility.
