it is very simple: just mix the colloid with CTAB. Do not use too high concentration, because CTAB forms micelles or mulilayers. But you can calculate the correct amount simply by the surface of the nanoparticles and footürint of the ligand.
Instead of physisorbed CTAB, you could also use the thiolated ananolous MTAB:
If you want to use the colloid for in vitro studies, you may like to consider that cationic ligands like CTAB are toxic, in particular if administered by nanoparticles.
Thank you for your valuable suggestions. I am actually willing to use CTAB protected gold nanorods for cell free system. Therfore, I am not much worried about the toxicity of the particles. But I appreciate your suggestion of MTAB, which will definitely come handy if I consider anything in vitro or in vivo.
