I am trying to simulate the axial load applied at the columns, which is caused by the prestension of the rod connected to columns, and the axial load will change due to the deformation of column when the lateral is applied and it may become zero when the shortening of columns is large, so the column will only suffer lateral load after that. Now, I have tried to use the *initial conditions, type=stress, to simulate the axial load, but it will always have converge problem no matter what the value of the stress is .
It will be very helpful if someone could give me some ideas on how to deal with this problem.

Never tried it, but it should work. Tie a truss to the column, and apply temperature to the truss. dont forget to specify thermal expansion parameter to the truss's material
