How can I measure the Valence-Band spectrum and work function by using X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy?

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is one of the most promising and important measurements in many chemical and physical fields.

However, I have little experience in dealing with that equipment and have no idea how to measure work function and valence band spectra with high precision.
