Hi everyone,

I am trying to synthesize PNVCL-COOH by free radical polymerization. The procedure is reported in this article: Macromol. Biosci. 2008, 8 , 843-851.

After the reaction, I added diethyl ether in the DMF solution, but no precipitate has formed. The best I can get is the formation of a white suspension after pouring a volume of ether circa ten times the volume of DMF in the flask. I tried to centrifugate, but I'm not comfortable by putting ether solutions inside of a centrifuge without an appropriate aspiration system. I also tried to freeze the solution, but I am not sure whether putting ether solutions in a freezer is a smart thing to do.

PNVCL is an analogue of PNIPAM: it's a thermoresponsive polymer. However, I cannot separate the polymer from the solvent (DMF) by heating the solution.

What's the key of precipitation? Do you think it could be useful to try to precipitate the polymer in apolar solvents? Thanks.
