Does anyone have any idea about how to functionalize TiO2 and SiO2 nano particles by Trichloro(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl)silane for Superoleophobic, simple solution methods.
With chlorosilanes, it is best to work in anhydrous solvents. When the silane reacts with a surface, it will release HCl, which will catalyze further hydrolysis of other silanes in solution if there is any water present. You can search literature for procedures for grafting trichlorosilanes to surfaces, but in general the best strategy will be to disperse the particles in a solution of anhydrous solvent (toluene, or maybe an alcohol if necessary to dissolve the fluorinated silane) and silane. It may be necessary to dry the particles in advance - if nothing else, to be aware of the exposure of the particles to humidity because adsorbed water may have a significant influence on the outcome. As far as the amount of silane to try, think about the surface area of the material and the likely area occupied by the silane when grafted.
