I have worked on an animal model to induce fibromyalgia syndrome in rats when I tried to express data of open field test, I found that normal rats had moved fast after putting them in the central area but, in the case of fibromyalgia induced rats, rats had stayed in the center without a significant moving and hadn't gone to the peripheral area. How can I explain what happened to my fibromyalgia induced rats?
It seems the conclusion would be that the fibromyalgia rats had significantly decreased locomotor activity than the controls. Any changes in center time would have to be interpreted with that caveat.
If you only get center time vs edge time out of your open field boxes, you have the wrong measurement and it will be difficult to draw any conclusions from it – the center vs edge time is usually used in the context of anxiety. From what I understand about fibromyalgia, you would be interested in measuring the travel distance of each rat, i.e. a direct measurement of the locomotor activity. If you can not get the travel distance from your open field setup, I would recommend to choose a different setup to measure locomotor activity directly, e.g. boxes with beam breaks, etc.
