I need to interpolate some soil contaminant values vertically across the layers (top to bottom). My values are taken from different depths/layers (1.5m, 3.0, 7.0, ). I need to be able to have values vertically across the entire horizon and be able to slice it at any depth. I primarily use ArcGIS, but would not mind achieving this in any other software that may be open source.

you can use the Kriging method in Arcgis software, I think that gives you a good results

As you are using Arcgis u can use interpolation techniques provided by the software but when selecting an interpolation technique check ur sampling distribution and also check the range and deviation of values if you have lower variability then u can use a simple interpolation technique like Nearest Neighbourhood or spline.. if your data is showing heterogeneity then go for other methods kriging etc..

I am aware of the interpolation tools in ArcGIS (IDW, Krigging, Spline, etc) and successfully used them to do interpolation of points, etc to generate a surfaces of values (grids). However, in this case, like I mentioned above, I need to interpolate VERTICALLY from different layer depths. I have soil samples taken at (0.5, 3.0, 7.0 depths). So I need to interpolate the values from the topmost layer, that is 0.5m to the bottommost layer, that is 7.0m). The target is to have a kind of cube with values from 0.5-7.0m, closing up/generating values for the un-sampled soil layer depths. How can I do this and with what software, preferably ArcGIS or Open source. Thanks.
