I have a problem with some samples injected in GC/MS. The volatile components coming from the reactor are condensed in acetone. The extracts are diluted and injected in GC/MS but sometimes they saturate the detector. This is of course a great problem since it reduces the lifetime of the filament.
I start with injecting 0.2 ul with splt ratio 500 or more without solvent delay. after this injection I turn off filament and detector during solvent exit. Reducing split ratio in sample analysis i am able to see some compounds beffore and after solvent without demage filament and detector. be carefully to select time table for system-off, normally uncrease 0.2-0.3 min.
For sure, when you are measuring the solvent you reduce life time of filament, detector and you have to clean your source more frequently!! That means you lose sensitivity. And additionally you are not able to quantify your potentially interesting peaks coming with the solvent. Please save your instrument, do solvent delay. If you want to detect really volatile compounds you can try to change your solvent, which have to more volatile than your compound or use headspace injection.
split ratio is a good option but you even contaminate the valves in the injector..
