I have some problems in the computation of the magnetic force exerted by a coil on the plunger of a solenoid valve. Particularly, using the equations related to the coenergy term and based on the total reluctance of the system, the result gives a force that decreases when the area of the plunger increases. This seems strange. Thank you for your help.
In the interest of rigor, you will probably have to do some kind of full magnetic field solution on the stator-plunger system. Once you have the field distribution, you can integrate the Maxwell stress tensor over a surface enclosing the plunger to find the force. The procedure is described in many sources.
Are you using virtual work method viz F =d Wstoredmagnetic/ dx (is current constant or flux linkage constant? in your assumption ). please check total stored energy(=1/2BH*area*length) vs length and see how it varies. If the plunger has already entered the coil the force will decrease because there is not much change in Wstored after that event.

The best book on this subject is "Electromagnetic Devices" by H. C. Roters, Wiley. Unfortunately the book is out of print. Should be available in a good Institutional library. Few old copies are available for sale from Amazon.
