My results are D6 (top right results) from the DNA from a damselfly nymph.
I am really bad at this subject area and don't understand what I am looking at or how to read my results. The only thing i understand is that the negative control column is empty which means that there was no contamination.
How can I describe the quality of the products of my DNA extraction and PCR amplification?
What are the likely causes of any unexpected or unsuccessful aspects of the results?
My PCR product is expected to be 710bp long.
what is your size standard, is sample 1 a positive control sample and is sample 3 the negative control sample and are samples 2 and 4 your dna samples please
Without any other information provided, the smeary band would be considered a bad product, the crisp sharp bands are good product (although I am not sure of the size you are looking for, or what your ladder size is- 1kb? 100bp?), and the empty lanes have no product (good if they are your negative controls)

About your gel and results could you please explain us the size of your marker
( standard used in gel) as Paul asked you...Could you tell us the loading order and also I can say that from the photo the gel is not very good...anyway if the PCR band is unique and sharp could be ok but depending the size of amplicon you are expecting...as we do not have info about the standard may be or not the size
you are looking for...when in the negative control there is no band at all should be a good PCR but do you have a positive control as well? Regarding the quality of you DNA check it also by readings at spectrophotometer e.g. NANODROP etc...and double check by gel also if you have enough material. I do not know which is the DNA which parts of D??

You have to do some in-silico PCR studies using the nucleotide of your primers using UCSC Genome Browser perhaps. So that you know your actual band size. Then increase the % of your agarose a bit to get clearer bands. Based on the information you gave on the presumed band size of your PCR product I suggest you use 1 kb ladder.
