I am trying to simulate the moisture damage phenomena in asphalt mixture using abaqus. I am looking for some suggestions and guidelines to define the contact contact between aggregate and asphalt matrix in abaqus.
You may embed aggregates in an asphalt ground matrix by using 'embedded region constraint' in Abaqus.

Abaqus offers a number of ways for this such as using special adhesives elements that can be used to represent the bond between the aggregate and asphalt binder. The challenge is to set it up properly using the correct mesh size and relevant options for the solution to make sense. At the interface, there is a large gradient of stress changes which has to be properly captured in your FE model. If this is not fulfilled, you would get a solution that does not represent the real problem. The other challenge is to verify the results; this is usually un-accessible for verifying measurement before/during its failure.
