I should estimate the number of branches of more than 100 trees that are necessary as input of a modeling study. Is there any quick way to estimate the number of branches? Meanwhile, I would like to know the number of leaf layers per branch.

A very interesting question. No idea how this can be done. Maybe there is a connection between size of canopy and number of branches coupled with some statistical distribution approach.
As Jobrun said: A very interestig question that i do not know if there is a method to do it. What I can think of it is related with the species. All that 100 trees are the same species or they are different species... if it is same species you can choose some trees at random and count the branches and correlate this number with DBH and finally yo can know number of brances by measuring DBH. However, if not same species divide all of them and select and measure as some species as populations you have.
You can use randomized branch sampling method. It has originally been introduced for counting number of fruits, but it can serve your purpose as well. You can find my article in Persian:

Start with one, then two until you have counted all the branches and leaves of the 100 trees. Then you will have your answer....This isn't rocket science after all....

Trees are fractals, they iterate about 5 times with say 3 branches; do the maths with that. Look at a Koch snowflake.
