Hello all together,
I have the problem that I want to obtain 3D landmarks using the software Landmark (Editor) from IDAV. But it seems that my .ply-files are to big (>150MB). When loading a second Surface the progam crashes. Is it possible to compress the Surface files without lossing to much information, so that I can work with more files in Landmark? If I´m right others work with files of only a few MB´s of size.

Import your .ply file into "MeshLab" and decimate via the filter > remesh > decimate. You will have to experiment on the level of reduction.

GREAT! It works. Now I can scale down my ply-files to below 10 MB´s with an acceptable amount of data loss. And Landmark works with more than one surface.

In addition to Meshlab you can also import ply in Blender and use the Decimate modifier. In the latest versions it is based on OpenSurfDiv, making it really fast as it can be optionally run multithreaded on CPU and/or GPU.
For others that may read this.. ParaView (also free and multi-platofrm) can also do decimation...so with Antonio post 3 options exist.
Now I also found out how it can be done in Amira directly ;-P But for me it seems MeshLab produces the better results.
Peter, I encourage you to try out Stratovan Checkpoint as well. I wrote the IDAV Landmark Editor software while I was a post doc at UC Davis some years ago. I left the University and started Stratovan and built Checkpoint is essentially the "next" version of Landmark. Checkpoint can do many of the things that Landmark does and much much more. It's more robust, can work with CT scans, can handle larger data, and is easier to use.

I am currently working on Stratovan Checkpoint and IDAV software, I have a similar problem for my research project on geometric morphometric analysis. I would like to shrink my ply file ( created using a Rexcan CS scanner and Geomagic 2014 software) which is around 56 MB to less than 10 MB if possible.
I am unable to get a clear image under MESHLAB. Would anyone be able to assist me with a step by step instruction?

Hey Darsha,
a 56 MB file should not be a problem to work with both, Landmark Editor and Checkpoint, if the hardware is appropiate. I worked with ply-files of similar size on a PC with 8 GB RAM and Intel i3 processor.
