Since one of the measures being sought-after in today's climate when it comes to the development of antibacterial resistance is Drug Repurposing, I am just curious as to how can it particularly contribute to the dilemma regarding that field. Like, what are some of the factors taken into account when it comes to repurposing already discovered and established drugs fitted to use it against antimicrobial resistance?
It is mostly legislation and trying to recover sunk development costs. New drugs need to undergo lengthy and expensive clinical trials to establish if they are safe to use. Drugs that have already passed human trials are a lot cheaper to get get approved for alternative purposes. The more applications a drug has means a larger market leading to a faster return on the investment. As such it is comparatively low risk research to screen libraries of existing drugs for previously unknown functions.
