How can apply the correlation relationship with the environmental study?

Can the researcher do a correlation among the environmental variables which measured in the field with values obtained from the application of certain mathematical equations on the values of the environmental variables (as values of water quality index with environmental factors)?

I observed a lot of researchers do this but I do not agree with them.
