The problem with university teaching is that most doctoral programs do not teach how to teach (except in Education). So teachers tend to teach the way THEY were taught by teachers who taught the way THEY were taught.
An academic programs based to be based on outcome requirements and teaching ability MUST be part of the outcome (even when the candidate is likely to be a researcher).
I agree with the views of the colleagues. Also, one efficient way to improve the quality of university teaching is the involvement of students in the teaching process, for example, by their active participation, where it is possible. In any case, let us remember that the teaching must serve the students more than the teachers.
Some suggestions to improve the quality of university teaching?.
Make the curriculum Dynamic not Dogmatic:
The curriculum or the syllabus for students in our country in higher education is outdated in most cases. It is stale, dogmatic and teaches things that the world has moved on with. To infuse dynamism, you need the curriculum to be progressive in nature. People need to be given the option of doing multiple courses in the first year and allowed to choose what they want after the first semester or year. The spirit of curriculum should be projects driven not exams driven, it should be innovation driven and it should evolve not stay stagnated. Exams need to be there to measure but they should be complimented with incentives for innovation. The students should also be given the option to switch to other if they feel so or if they justify the basic criteria.
Make the Teachers feel worthy, pay them more:
The academic curriculum board, in most cases is filled with people above their 65’s and 70’s. With all due respect to them, I strongly feel that you need a bunch of younger professors in there to have that mix of experience and youth in the system. Very few among the young are actually in teaching for the sake of teaching. A graduating student earns more in an IT company than what a Lecturer or even a Assistant Professor earns in some colleges .
Industry Interaction a Placement Obligation:
One of the key pillars in growth in education is the level of industry interaction with the students. Companies should be sought out for such interactions, if they don’t agree to it, then the universities should use their advantage. When companies come for placements, there should be a basic qualification criteria for their eligibility for the placements
Education is key for every citizen, economy or country. Quality in education is the zeal of everyone. A parent would want to take his kid in a school he/she believes will inculcate good values/ good morals and provide best in terms of quality.
Key factors to ensure quality are:
1. Employment of qualified teachers.
2. Good remuneration to motivate teachers
3. Conducive environment with necessary infrastructure
As far as Spanish Educational and University System is concerned, “Spain produces good graduates with too theoretical knowledge and makes it difficult the integration of those students, who lack basic competences.”
Unfortunately, we are producing a large number of graduates, but not skilled. The University teaching should be industry oriented. Most of the Universities are focusing on Academicians, but the experts from the industries are also useful for universities.
In my opinion (after having the right human, material and financial resources for proper functioning), the best ways to improve the academic level are:
1- reduce the rate of success;
2- increase the mobility of researchers and teachers between universities.
I support the points raised by Prof. Debi.S.Saini, regular evaluation in teaching methods, improve the mode of teaching, use modern techniques in teaching and finally mobalize and motivate the students towads education.
