If you mean starting a three phase motor from single phase supply, then I think inherently a three phase motor wont start as the rotating magnetic field will not be produced. The motor windings will overheat as the current drawn will be very high and eventually windings will burn down if supply is not switched off.

However, if some phase splitting arrangement using capacitors are installed then I think it is possible. Besides, you can have ac-ac converters to make it possible.

Dear Hassan Fakhrtaha, Practically when we want to check the three phase motor  working only in the lab for the testing for a short time duration, then we can run it with single phase supply, with the help of the capacitor. But for the long time duration it is not effective.

In practice, when a single phase system is used to feed one coil of  a three-phase induction motor that has no load attached, the motor will probably launch.

The reason is that the standing wave magnetic field, that is produced when feeding one coil, can be decomposed in two traveling wave fields with the same frequency but opposite rotational directions. Due to imbalances in the motor, one of both field will be "favored" and the motor will start rotating in the direction of that field.

When two lines of the motor are connected to the 1-phase supply, the third line can be connected via a series connected capacitor such that the third terminal is phase shifted by approximately 120 deg. Thus, the motor sees a 3-phase supply. However, the actual phase shift depends on motor loading and capacitor value.

Alternatively, a 3-phase ac motor drive system designed for operating from a 1-phase input supply (as readily available in the market) can be used at any loading. However, here it is assumed that the total loading on the 1-phase system is restricted to about 5kVA.

Many single phase motors are built from existing three phase motors with an additional capacitor. I illustrate it with a star connection (I hope the schematics is comprehensible):

It works well at low power. E.g.: 1 HP, 230V, 50Hz, C aprox. 70 microFarad.

Opposit senses of rotation are obtained by connecting the starting capacitor to the line or to the neutral pole.

Note that the capacitor is for AC and should have an RMS voltage rating well higher that the mains supply voltage.

It is important to have in mind that the available power on the single phase motor is much less than the rated power of the original three phase motor.

If a 3-ph motor is run from 1-ph at such a condition that the three voltages are balanced by the capacitor used, there is no apparent reason for the available power to be "much less" than the original 3-ph motor, considering that there is no power restriction from the source.

Just an idea, which I have never done: A 3 phase motor can be supplied from a 3 phase PWM inverter. That inverter only needs a DC input. That DC input can be obtained from a diode bridge rectifier. I don't know whether a boost converter is also needed.

Let me add a note to the suggestion of Burc Deleen. That solution is the most commonly used in commercially available variable speed drives with single phase supply: they consist of a cascade of a single phase diode bridge + an intermediate capacitor + a three-phase inverter (with pwm command), and are found for low power induction motors, say, up to 2.2 kW.

The motor windings should be "wye" or "delta" connected, in order to match their phase-to-phase voltage rating to the single phase voltage supply.

Let me answer to Sujit Biswas'comment too.

It is easy to show that a 3-ph motor supplied by a 1-ph with the help of a starting capacitor, for example as depicted by me upwards, can not reach its rated power.

A 3-ph motor receives the rated voltage in each winding, summing 3 x the power in a single winding.

In the single phase arrangement, the best you can do is to have 2 windings at full power (considering that the single voltage supply is the double of the rated voltage of each winding - but not easy to have that chance...). The third winding is only useful for creating a bit of starting torque; after that it draws a litlle power through the capacitor attenuation.
