COVID19 pandemic has shown us blatantly how overexploitation of natural
resources proves to be detrimental to nature and natural resources. As we
are gasping for breath under this raging pandemic, it is the time to stop and
introspect on how we could mend our ways as responsible global citizens.
This world is one family (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam). Any wrongdoings
on our part in any country might have its repercussions all over the world.
Therefore, we must move forward sustainably and develop holistically. Ecofriendly
approach is the need of the hour. We believe that the present edition
of the book will be the pioneer of its kind to ponder over the most challenging
issues of the present day. The modern day world is gripped with problems
such as climate change, water crisis, overpopulation, natural disasters, food
insecurity, environmental pollution, oil spill, ill distribution of economic
resources and overexploitation of natural resources. Global forests and other
natural resources are being degraded and damaged rampantly. It is not an
exaggeration to say that the present day world population demands food,
employment and a healthy environment around to survive, but to achieve
these targets, we need to find sustainable solutions for unplanned
industrialization, urbanization, overpopulation, degradation of natural
resources etc. At this critical juncture, it is extremely important to cater
information on various principles, rules and causes of environmental
degradation to people of all ranks of the society so that we can develop a
sustainable Blue Economy for the betterment of the nation in specific and
world in general. This is a comparatively newer vista in the field of
oceanography and environmental science. We have tried to the best of our
ability to make the concepts of the book comprehensive, up to date backed
up with field level data so that the book may serve as a ready source of
information to the readers who want to pursue their career in Blue Economy
and other environment related subjects. We shall consider our efforts to be
amply rewarded if this book serves the needs of the student community and
fulfil their purpose.
One of the positive effects of this pandemic is the reduction in the use of natural resources. Low level of emission due to restriction of movements between countries, low working hours and reduction in demand.
