Hi all,

If I tell you a story and suddenly I add an element which is incoherent with the rest of the narrative, you'll be able to pick up on this conceptual inconsistency and say: ''Wait a minute! That makes no sense!''   Moreover, you will probably be able to do so even if you have no conscious deliberate intention of tracking inconsistencies in the story.  I'm interested in how this ability works.  I'm guessing information that is in short term memory is automatically compared with other information in Long term-memory...but does anyone know of any work on this process?  Is there any cognitive or neuroscience studies on this topic?  Are there any models describing how this process of ''tracking conceptual  inconsistencies'' functions?  In other words: how is it that we are able to experience conceptual confusion when something is inconsistent?  Thanks for your help!
