Patients' rights as an extension of right to health and more basically right to life, is one of the main concerns of the recent studies in medical ethics. In recent years, great progress has been made in terms of patient rights. In some cases, it is not uncommon for health professionals to begin to think that the rights of the patients have been replaced by their rights and this trend can be seen in many countries. How are the developments in patient rights affecting the rights of physicians and health professionals? What is your opinion about this issue?
Bottom line in the case of competent patients and competent physicians:
1. It is the patient’s body/mild/soul; and
2. the physician’s duty to care, treat, and educate the patient to the extent the patient is willing and will allow such contacts.
Dear colleague,
the trend of development of patient´s right can be also seen in Slovakia, in the texts of different binding legislative acts, but also in non-binding recommendations. There is also a visible debate, if patients haven´t acquired the position of consumer and if they don´t buy the health care already. The pressure on emancipation of patients and on their equal position in relation to health care professionals is very strong. However, only partial attention is paid to the question if all patients under all circumstances are completely able to review their health, the possibilities of treatment which are offered to them, to provide real informed consent, etc.
I think in the future it will be needed to balance interests of both parties of this relationship.

Dear Barbara, thanks for your detailed answer. The development process of patient rights is also experienced in my country, as experienced in most of the world. However, I hope in this transition period about developing the rights, some problems, in practice, can be overcome by education.

There is a huge gap in terms of knowledge between the patient and the physcians. The trust issues and physical constraints exacerbates the situaion. Cooperation and communication seems like the key related to this tension.
Dear Hatice Keskin, thanks for your answer. You are right in your opinion, perhaps my question may not mean the same issue for different cultures. In our country, different and wrong interpretations of the rights sometimes may be the reason of violence to health workers. I agree with your opinion that cooperation and communication are necessary to prevent these problems or misrepresentation of rights.
