I am a new user of mass scaling in Abaqus CAE. I have a mass scaling factor= 50 for some elements in my 2D orthogonal cutting dynamic simulation. I have a range of values for ALLKE and ALLIE in my history output. I am trying to check if the ALLKE/ALLIE ratio is < 10% or not. I have 2 qns.
1. I assume I need to find ALLKE, ALLIE and the ratio only for the mass scaled elements and not the whole model. Am I correct?
2. For the ALLKE/ALLIE ratio, do I take an average of all values from ALLKE (avg_K), avg of all values from ALLIE (avg_I) and do avg_K / avg_I ? Or do I take the max of all values from ALLKE (max_K), max of all values from ALLIE (max_I) and do max_K / max_I ? Or am I totally missing something? I welcome and appreciate all suggestions and advice. Please let me know if more info is needed.

I would use ALLKE for all elements, at least if your problem is quasi-static. (Which machining usually is unless you are at very high speeds.)
Hello Mr. Baeker, thank you for the reply. I am trying to simulate a 2D orthogonal cutting operation of bone at a velocity of 13.4 mm/s as a dynamic explicit simulation. I have cohesive elements throughout the specimen to simulate crack propagation. When I simulated the process as dynamic explicit, at a velocity of 300mm/s with a coarse mesh, the simulation ran. But with a fine mesh and the velocity of 13.4mm/s, the simulation gets aborted. I tried mesh biasing, mass scaling etc. but did not make much progress. Any ideas and inputs will be very helpful.
