The transition from a linear economy where end-of-life products will end up in the easiest and cheapest options (landfilling or burning) to a circular economy where more effective waste management options (like repair and recycling) are emphasized requires massive investment and governmental support. For example, a change in product design with enhanced repairability and sustainability without losing product performance requires academic research and financial support from producers. Therefore, aside from factors such as policy making, global economic conditions have a strong influence on making this transition happen. Unfortunately, the economic statistics of world powers are not promising at the moment. Therefore, at least for the next couple of years until we pass from the current economic recession, I believe making this transition is a bit challenging.
