Currently, I am doing research on the topic "Effects of Aspidiotus rigidus Reyne Infestations to Sugar Content of Coconut Water via Benedict Test for Reducing Sugars." Suggestions on modifications to the procedure for the Benedict test that need to be done because the sample is coconut water are highly encouraged. Thank you!
Benedict's reagent reacts with the aldehyde group of reducing sugars - not "sugars" per se. Other compounds with reducing potential can give a + response (e.g. vitamin C). Tho' monosaccharides are effectively with in techniques detected, sucrose does not have an exposed aldehyde group and there is not detected. It's not currently used that much for urine testing. In complex mixtures Benedicts will likely be semi-quantitative at best.
